FAQ
Surfboard Bags
Walk me through how to choose a surfboard bag.
Selecting the right surfboard bag depends on several factors, including:
- Bag Length: All of our bags (except for Resession series) are cut a little longer than the listed size, so you do not need to size up. For example, a 6’0 board will easily fit in a 6’0 bag, and you do not need to go up to a 6’3.
- Bag Style: The template needed to fit your board properly. Shortboard is for boards with a more pulled-in nose and tail, fish/hybrid is for wider boards with more volume, and longboard is for the traditional longboard (non SUP). See the comparison/sizing charts on product pages for more details.
- Intended Use: For everyday trips to and from the beach by car, bike, or foot, any of our self-titled Day Bags are sufficient. For extended trips, especially by airline, any of our self-titled Travel Bags are recommended to get your gear to the destination safely.
- Storage Needs: While any of our bags would technically work for storage purposes. A good, less expensive option is the Board socks. While offering no padding, these are made with high-quality knitted material with reinforcements around the fins and nose that will keep dust off and help prevent discoloration.
How do I clean my surfboard bag?
Gently wipe the exterior with a damp cloth and mild soap. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials. For the interior, vacuum out any sand or debris.
Can I use my surfboard bag as a travel suitcase?
We like your ingenuity! While it's possible, surfboard bags are not designed for general travel use. They lack the compartments and features typically found in suitcases and only have storage designed for fins, wax, tie-downs, leashes, wetsuits/trunks, and other travel essentials.
What is the best surfboard bag for airlines?
This depends on how many boards you are taking and what restrictions you may have. All of our travel-grade bags are designed for airline travel and feature 10mm of foam protection. From 1-2 board Rhino travel bags up to the 4-7 board wheeled coffin and in between. Many airlines have specific size restrictions on bags, so be sure to check with them before booking. We have found that while some airlines say they will not accept bags over certain linear dimensions, they often will, but they will charge an oversized fee. It can come down to the person who checks you in.
My bag zipper broke. Can I fix it?
Depending on the zipper type and severity of the damage, you might be able to repair it yourself using a zipper repair kit. However, for a more reliable solution, we recommend contacting a professional luggage repair service or upholstery shop to help you realign the track and zipper. In most cases, we can send you zipper repair parts if needed for this service as we do not do any in-house repairs.
Traction Pads
How do I remove a traction pad?
Use a heat gun or hair dryer to soften the adhesive—leaving in the sun for a bit can also help—then carefully peel the pad off. Be gentle to avoid damaging your board. Remove any remaining glue with a wax remover liquid like goo gone. Be sure to thoroughly clean and remove any of this oil/debris from the area before applying a new pad to ensure a good bond.
What kind of traction pad is best for my board?
This depends on the board template. Pads with a more pulled in tail that feature a beveled kick are good for narrower performance style shortboards and wider pads that can fan out are recommended for fish/hybrid style boards.
Do I need a leash plug traction pad?
While not strictly necessary, a leash plug traction pad can help prevent your leash from snagging on your pad and interfering with your surfing. It is best to apply any traction pad so that the end of the kick allows the leash string to go 90 degrees without touching the pad.
leashes
How long should my leash be?
The ideal leash length depends on your surfing style, wave conditions, and personal preference. A longer leash (around 8ft to 10ft) allows for more freedom of movement on longer boards and greater separation if you fall. A shorter leash (around 5.5ft to 7ft) is good for shorter boards and provides less drag and tangling. We offer a variety of leash lengths and thicknesses to suit different needs and wave conditions.
How often should I replace my leash?
Leashes are crucial safety equipment and should be replaced regularly. Signs of wear and tear include cracks, fading, or a loss of elasticity. It's a good practice to inspect your leash before each surf session and replace it at least once a year, especially if you surf frequently.
